Here is the full written text of the assignment copied and pasted in case you have trouble reading from the images (which you can click to blow up) …

You have 45 minutes to visit two or more of these sims. This is an experiential activity, so choose a sim with which you are unfamiliar. As you go through the sim and interact with the environment, consider the purpose of the build. Who is the intended audience? What is the purpose? What elements of the sim design help to achieve the purpose of the sim–objects, sounds, sky, exhibits, things to do?
How is the sim engaging? How is it motivating?
What design features of the build do you notice first? How do these enhance your initial impressions of the sim? What feelings do you experience as you progress through the sim? What design features of the sim and experience promote immersion?
NOTE: Wearing headphones will enhance your experience.

I visited all of the sims listed above and have images to show for it. However I spent most of my time visiting GENOME Island and CHINESE Island, so those are the two that I will expound upon most. I will start with Chinese Island since that was chronologically my first visit on the tour.

2017-09-06 CHINESE Island, Monash University 12
2017-09-06 CHINESE Island, Monash University 12; Well, I didn’t learn any Chinese but I am certainly motivated to do so and travel to China based on the scenery and pleasant simulated although lonely “cultural” experiences. Beautiful architecture!

Based on my experience of Monash University’s “CHINESE Island” I can definitely see how it is meant to be a compliment to the traditional classroom and certainly not a stand alone tool. I could see using something like this in my own language teaching and/or learning endeavors in the context of formal/institutional education. It seems like a potentially very useful space to demo and have different props during a standard class with a projection and/or to host student/speaker meetups mediating distance learning. Overall though I am more motivated by the idea of persistent world language learning communities that can function as language testing and training grounds. Perhaps an entire game, sim, or virtual world could be built around language acquisition and utilization, where the steps for learning the languages are laid out such that individuals can form small collectives and go on epic quests and gain prestige and whatever else as they master, share, and create more and more language(s). I am trying to imagine what it might look like to translate my own Intergalactic Space Opera – Collective and Autonomous Game for Spanish Class into such a virtual world / game.

Richard III = some European royalty, same with Anastasia Romanov but more apparent mystery as far as I know; Thomas Jefferson = slave owner and perpetrator of colonial invasion; Nicolas Copernicus is credited with major astronomical advances, something to do with measuring the circumference of the earth, oh ya heliocentrism…

Or from another angle, did he even believe in monogamy? Did his wife? Maybe that wasn’t their thing and he really was loyal to whatever their actual commitments were to each other, just not to what English society expected of them. Hmmm?

GENOME Island (G)
What simulations did you visit and why? How did your experience of the simulation enhance your understanding? What surprised you, engaged you, motivated you as you moved around the sim?

So after restating the prompt for GENOME Island, I see that I answered some of the questions already in my images and captions. I was apparently surprised and engaged by the DNA Mysteries piece. I was captivated by many other aspects around the island as well that I never had a chance to dive fully into. I am wondering what the kitty cat was all about. I also want to know what it’s like to climb the whole staircase structure following all the exercises along the way. A previous question I had regarding GENOME Island vs ToxCity is answered here as well. I thought I had wandered into something separate from genome island. From rereading this now though I get the idea that GENOME Island is an island with many sims inside of it. I spent the most time on the ToxCity and DNA Mysteries sims. ToxCity because I wanted to collect all the info cards from the different sites, even if I never end up looking at them. Something about archivist and/or hoarding tendencies I might have. The DNA Mysteries piece was mostly a big deal for me because when I saw four White/European faces and “DNA” I immediately suspected some form of racism or Eugenics at play and I wanted to know what was in the educational designers thoughts when they chose those images and stories. After pursuing all four items in that sim (is that a sim? or just an activities within a sim?) I think the educational designer in this case was mostly repeating a common set of examples given in classes about DNA without paying particular attention to how the examples might be read with regards to race since they seem like stock/go to stories in teaching about DNA in education.

I will now leave the reader with images and perhaps more on my other brief visits…

RE: “Virtual Hallucinations” …some thoughts & resources on schizophrenia & “mental illness” …

I remain ambivalent regarding the virtual hallucinations sim. I would need to explore it more in depth to know how I really feel about it. The possibility of using SL to teach about “mental illnesses” or even using it to heal or treat them, such as with that one MD, is intriguing to me. The major cautionary piece that comes up for me though is not wanting to see a world where medical staff are trained with something like this which is a very imperfect and imprecise tool based on peoples writings and representations of others’ subjective experiences through a medicalized lens. My sense is that, despite so many people reporting that it helped them empathize with or understand more of the experience of those who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, it will only assist in deepening the othering process if the medicalization and pathologization of inidviduals experiences those symptoms continues to be embraced by the field and society more broadly without a similar scrutiny, critique, and pathologization of modern/colonial society that generates those symptoms. In other words, “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society” (Jiddu Krishnamurti) … and I would like to see Virtual Hallucinations sim(s) taking that into account. Maybe it already does that, I need to investigate further before making a final judgement but so far my impression is that it sticks with a pretty uncritical acceptance of schizophrenia as individual pathology as per the DSM.
